Terrazzo Landing, Welfare Office, 1961

I found this half-landing during a clearance survey — the building is scheduled for demolition in the spring. What stopped me was the way thirty years of mopping had worked the terrazzo into a shallow bowl exactly where people paused to catch their breath before the next flight, and the single window throwing a blade of late-afternoon light across the worn aggregate so you could read every chip and repair like a geological section. I pulled the grain hard in the cold bath until the pale chips of marble almost buzz against the dark grout.
