My daughter stood at the edge of the wheat field just before the light gave out, her palms turned upward as if she could keep the golden hour from leaving. I didn't ask her to pose. I just waited. This is about the particular grief of a child who doesn't yet know she's feeling grief — only that something bright is going away.
