Overflow Ledger, Thessaloniki Kermes House

The eastern wall of a derelict kermes-scarlet workshop on the Thessaloniki waterfront, where forty years of vat spillage has built up a stratigraphy of crimson, rust-brown, and near-black that reads like sedimentary rock. I came back three times before the light fell low enough to flatten the relief of the encrusted pigment without losing its depth — large-format film catches the way the stain is simultaneously on the surface and inside it. Nothing has been cleaned or staged; the bucket hook is still in the wall.
