Mooring Ring, Receding Water, Vestmanna

Cast-iron ring set flush into a basalt quay face, the stone beneath it stained in three distinct tide-bands — rust bleed at the top, black algae through the middle, pale barnacle crust at the waterline. I made this frame from a rubber dinghy at low-water slack, shooting straight into the wall so the horizon disappears entirely and the whole image becomes a kind of stratigraphy. The ring itself is almost incidental; it's the record the water leaves in the rock that I was after.
