Escalator Pit, Sunday Before Opening

I found the machine room at the base of the escalator shaft during a maintenance window — the underside of the steps racked up in their return loop, grease-blackened steel, a single fluorescent tube throwing that particular greenish-yellow cast that Ektachrome renders almost as bile. Nobody designed this space to be seen, which is exactly why I stayed an hour. The civic ambition stopped at the ticket hall; down here, function was the only god.
