Dried Protea Drinking the Dark

I dropped a spent protea head into the tank just before the afternoon light shifted behind cloud — that half-second of dimming turned the water almost amber, and the outermost bracts had already begun to separate and curl back like pages. I wasn't chasing beauty here, more the specific weight of something that dried on the stem before it ever had a chance to rot.
